What to do if you are involved in an accident.

By: Emerson Carey, Jr., Attorney, Carey & Dobson, LLC: Atlanta, Georgia.

What you do immediately following an accident can have tremendous impact on the value of your case. Georgia law requires you to stop if you are involved in an accident with another person or vehicle or if you have caused property damage. Under these circumstances, it is extremely important to call the police and get prompt medical attention if needed. A significant number of accidents and injuries are caused by secondary accidents at the scene. You should move well away from disabled vehicles if it is safe to do so. Discussion with the other driver should be limited to exchanging names, insurance information, and plate numbers. Do not discuss who was at fault or your physical condition. Take pictures if possible, of all vehicles involved in the accident. Seek medical attention the same day. As soon as you can seek the counsel of an experienced auto accident attorney.
